A More Meaningful Holiday Season

With the news today that U.S. unemployment has topped 10 percent for the first time in 26 years, we are reminded that many of those talented people will not find a "W-2" job any time soon.

Some are prompted to start their own business, either seeing an opportunity or out of other options. Thanks to the internet, those who are artists and crafters have become entrepreneurs, offering their beautiful handcrafted work to a worldwide audience. We would like you to consider supporting these artisans, by doing your holiday shopping at handmade mall venues like Artfire.com.

There are many more venues (just scroll down our right sidebar column for links), such as the megasite Etsy.com. But in our opinion, Artfire appeals to a much broader audience and is much more democratic in terms of seller promotion. What does that mean to you as a buyer? You have easier access to the gifts you want to purchase, as you can quickly find products in a wider range of design and styles.

If you're visiting us from outside the U.S., in addition to Artfire we also like Dawanda. While most artisans at both sites sell worldwide, Dawanda has a larger selection of European sellers and multiple language options. We find both sites very easy to navigate.

You can also scroll down our right side column to the Links to Our Featured Artisans. These will take you directly to the shops we have spotlighted on this blog, and you can be assured of beautiful gifts at fair prices. We hope you will consider supporting these cottage businesses with your holiday shopping this year. Your gifts will be more meaningful, and you will have a direct impact on improving our economy!

Retro Bubble Fabric Funky Fun Handbag

The workmanship on this purse is superb! Here's what we mean by the joy of owning handmade goods over department store banality.

In a retro fabric with multi-color bubbles on a deep brown background, this handbag features a front flap closure with wooden accent ring that duplicates those found at the handles. There's a hidden magnetic closure and it's fully lined in coordinating deep turquoise with a divided pocket. It measures a generous 18" wide at the bottom x 11" tall.

We spotted this beautiful bag at Jeneri Jewelry, a mother/daughter collective from Illinois and Ohio. In their Etsy shop you'll find Jen's beautiful jewelry designs, plus finely crafted handbags like this one created by her mom, Louisa.

Price is $32.00 + $5.00 U.S. shipping. See this item at http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=27515389.

Rustic Gourd Basket with Jasper Stones

There's something so very warm and inviting about this handcrafted basket by ProudHeart Creations of Maryland. Fill it with yarn, sea shells or nothing at all! It would also be a unique wedding gift, as it reminds me of ancient wedding bowls signifying best wishes for an abundant home.

With painstaking detail, long pine needles have been woven around the top of the gourd, and Chinese picture jasper chips are sewn in for interest. Multiple layers of varnish make the basket a keepsake to treasure for generations.

Botanica Peony Wedding Invitation Suite

We've rarely seen custom made wedding invitations more beautifully done than those offered by Pasaii Paperie of Massachusetts. Shown here is the stunning "Botanica Peony" suite, which includes invitation, response and save-the-date cards with envelopes in a bold modern design. Colors and fonts are chosen by you. In addition to a pleasing array of designs, we are particularly impressed with their choice of a paper mill that uses only renewable energy, running entirely on hydroelectric power since 1922.

Price is $5.20 per suite: 50 sets, for example, would cost $260.00 with worldwide shipping available. Visit their 1000 Markets shop to view more lovely designs in both modern and vintage-inspired styles, and see this item at http://www.1000markets.com/users/pasaiidesignstudio/collections/8259/products/2298.

Peppermint Yo Yo Quilt Garland

Whether your decor is modern minimalist or country chic, I think this beautiful holiday garland in reds and white would be lovely for your tree...or perhaps a swag for the mantle? Very festive!

This handmade heirloom quality garland is offered by Yo Yo Cottage of Georgia. I love her description of the origin of the yo yo quilt:

The yo yo originated in the 1930s. It was also called puff, pom pom, rosette, pinwheel. Back then, even the smallest piece of fabric was precious. Scraps from sewing projects were used to create coverlets and table covers. Even worn out clothing was checked for a usable piece! This is a perfect way to save pieces of a loved ones clothing and make into a "memory quilt"! I can remember looking at my grandmom's (we called her Babci) yo yo quilt she kept on her porch swing and pick out which pieces came from my clothing!

Price is $6.00 per 3 foot length (you choose your custom length) with free U.S. shipping ($3.00 Canada, $4.00 worldwide). Visit her Artfire shop for many more yo yo creations, and see this item at http://www.artfire.com/modules.php?name=Shop&op=listing&product_id=436461.
